Phonemic Awareness
One prerequisite for learning to read is being aware that words are composed of individual sounds. This awareness is called phonological awareness. Adults help children develop this awareness by reading to them. Encourage your child to “play with sounds” through the use of rhyme, rhythm and the repetition of sounds. Phonemic Awareness is the ability to manipulate the sounds in our oral language. Rhyming, beginning sounds, blending and segmenting sounds are phonological awareness tasks.
